Israel was rocked Sunday morning by massive demonstrations against the government of Benjamin Netanyahu that blocked major highway intersections around Tel Aviv and other places. The protestors demanded that the government agree to any deal necessary that would free the remaining hostages held prisoner by Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

Many protestors also demonstrated outside of the homes of government ministers.

Sunday is the first day of the work week in Israel and the demonstrations came during the morning rush hour. As this comes after the Sabbath – Saturday -when people travel, the roads on Sunday mornings are more heavily trafficked than on any other morning during the week.

The Israel Police reported that on Sunday afternoon what it described as a “short disturbance of order” by a handful of protesters began and was accompanied by the blocking of a main road at the HaKfar HaYarok intersection, which is located just north of Tel Aviv.

The police said that some of the protestors attacked police officers. The police forces on the spot declared the demonstration illegal and dispersed the “troublemakers.”

Large forces of police officers have been working throughout the country since the morning hours to maintain security and public order and to direct traffic in several centers of protests and marches, some of which were not coordinated ahead of time with the police. These are the ones the police declared to be illegal.

The protests come as reports indicate that Hamas is willing to drop its demand for a guarantee by Israel that it would end all fighting as part of any deal for the release of hostages. The terror group is also said to have agreed to a phased truce and hostage exchange deal.

More than 1,200 people were murdered during the October 7 attack. Many, including children, were burned alive. Hundreds were taken to Gaza as hostages. More than one hundred are still believed to be held there; however, Hamas has not given proof of life for the hostages it holds.

There is no way to know at this time exactly how many hostages are still alive.
