We all know about how heavy drinking can cause heart problems and liver disease. However, we usually associate such health problems with alcoholics, not moderate drinkers. But now we have reason to believe that even just a few drinks a week are harmful to one’s health.
Just a few drinks a week can cost you several days of life and a drink a day can lose you several months. And if you drink up to five types of alcoholic beverages per day then you can expect to see your life reduced by at least two years. This is according to the research from the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

Dr Tim Stockwell, a scientist at the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research told the Daily Mail, “Alcohol is our favorite recreational drug. We use it for pleasure and relaxation, and the last thing we want to hear is that it causes any harm…it’s comforting to think that drinking is good for our health, but unfortunately, it’s based on poor science.”
According to the CDC, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that adults of legal drinking age (21 or older) should not drink alcohol or drink in moderation if they choose to drink alcohol.
Contrary to past beliefs, moderate alcohol consumption doesn’t guarantee health perks. Compared to not drinking, moderate drinking might raise your chances of death and chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease. Even a low amount of alcohol can increase the risk of certain cancers, particularly breast and colorectal cancers.
So you might want to think twice before you have that glass of wine with your dinner, at least if you do that every day. Or if you have that “just one beer” every day after work you should know that it could be taking time away from your life. The point is that any alcohol consumption could be harming your health in ways that you do not even know.
